"Race is complex—it is highly influenced by the social and political histories of a place. Because of this, racial identity is also complex. Our racial identity largely impacts how we see the world and how we are seen in the world, which in turn impacts our generalizations, attitudes, and actions towards others."
-None Others Are Possible, Conclusion
Exploring race, racial identity, and racism in a personal way.
To culminate my social science studies, I examined issues of race, racial identity, and racism through my unique lens as the daughter of an immigrant and as a Latina. None Others Are Possible are a series of letters written to my father that explore what it means to be a person of color in Latin America and in the United States, how this shapes identity, and how identity and experience impacts behavior.
This passion project came out of a year long exploration of race from a biological, anthropological, historical, and sociological point of view. It involved several months of intensive research using the University of Cincinnati’s amazing libraries, intense discussions between myself, my friends, my family, and UC faculty, late nights writing, and finally formatting the letters into a thoughtfully designed book.
